Autosuggestion

Mantras or autosuggestions are positive words and sentences which, when repeated over and over, change your inner world, create new beliefs and vibrations which eventually change your reality. The ancient spiritual masters were all aware of the tremendous power of repeated positive statements. Nowadays known as autosuggestions or affirmations, this simple and easy technique is also at the heart of many modern self development methods.

You too can use mantras to achieve different kinds of positive goals, such as confidence or courage; better memory or concentration; recovery from disease; better relationships; getting rid of bad habits; and success in education, work or business.

  • Do mantras or autosuggestions really work?

Yes, they do. Between 1910 and 1926, French psychologist Emile Coue helped thousands of patients recover from all forms of pain including migraine, headaches, asthma, stuttering, gastric ulcer, insomnia, tumor and paralysis in his clinic using only autosuggestions. All the patients needed to do was to repeat “Day by day in every way I am getting better and better” twenty times in the morning and twenty times in the afternoon.

A mantra helped Professor M U Ahmed, the pioneer of Applied Psychology in Bangladesh return from the brink of death. In 1934 he became infected with paratyphoid. After months of failed effort the doctors gave up hope and suggested he spend his last days at home. As he was being taken to Barishal, his hometown, by a boat on the Buriganga, he discovered a new mantra for life. He started saying ami bachte chai, ami bachbo ( I want to live, I will live) again and again from the core of his being. He got better. In 1973, he was declared clinically dead and yet came back to life in the same process.

Prof. Ahmed did not apply autosuggestions only on himself. Thousands of patients have had astonishing recoveries using autosuggestions in his Medistic Psychotherapy process. And since 1993, thousands of Quantum Graduates and Associates have used autosuggestions to overcome every kind of problem imaginable.

  • How do they work?

You might ask how some simple words and sentences can bring such great changes in lives. Scientists are beginning to unveil the mystery little by little.

Our brain has the power to transform every logical desire into reality. The key to using this infinite potential is to believe. For example, in order to use the power of your mind to get a job, you need to believe that you can get a job. In most cases, this positive belief is created by earlier experiences: the memory of past successes generate confidence in the present. This leads us to the question, what about those who have no experience of success, who have experienced nothing but failure in their lives?

They have a way too. Clinical psychologists have discovered that the human nervous system cannot differentiate between reality and imagination. If you imagine an event, this generates the same brain waves as would have been created if the incident was real.

This is the secret behind the effectiveness of mantras, autosuggestions and affirmations. If you repeat the same positive statements about yourself over and over again, first new brain waves are created, then the working structure of your brain begins to change permanently. After years of research neuroscientists have found that when we send new information to the brain, new dendrites, i.e. new communication paths between the neurons are created. The brain then creates a new reality.

  • How can I change my life with mantras or autosuggestions?

Very easy. Simply identify the things in your life that you want to change. Which personality traits do you want to attain? Which harmful habits do you want to break free of? Which obstacles do you want to overcome? This might be getting well from a disease; overcoming negative emotions such as stress, anxiety, fear or anger; resolving relationship problems; advancing in education of career, or progressing spiritually.

Then identify the mantras that would help bring about your desired change. In the section below, you will find more than a thousand wonderful autosuggestions organized in different categories.

Then start practicing them. The best way to practice autosuggestions is in the meditative level. When our body is relaxed, our mind is more open, more ready to embrace change.

Until you learn how to meditate however, simply sit in a quiet place. Close your eyes. Relax your mind and body by taking a few deep long breaths. Give your entire attention to the autosuggestions on your list. Remember how attentive you are when you are mesmerized by a movie? That much attention is enough. Now repeat the autosuggestions to yourself over and over again. Let your imagination give flight to the words. Repeat each autosuggestion between 20 and 100 times. Practice in this way twice every day. Whenever you get a few moments in the midst of your day to-day work repeat the autosuggestions. The autosuggestions will create a new resonance in your mind and body. Slowly and silently you will start changing from within. You will have a new life.

  • Can I make my own mantras or autosuggestions?

Yes, you can. Just follow these rules while forming them.

    1. These autosuggestions are intended for you personally. So use the first person, e.g. 'I am bold and courageous.'

    2. Be completely positive. Write down what you desire - not what you want to avoid.

    3. Avoid negative words. Avoid phrases such as ‘cannot’, ‘will not’, ‘do not want’ etc. Instead of saying ‘I do not have any fear’, say ‘I am courageous’.

    4. Do not compare yourself with the past or with someone else. Do not say, ‘I am as courageous as John'.

    5. Do not include any time limit in your autosuggestion. Time limits can be stressful.

As the goal of your mantra or autosuggestion choose something:

    1. you genuinely desire, not something you want just to impress others.

    2. that is consistent with your other goals.

    3. is specific and detailed.

    4. is not harmful to others.

    5. is challenging but realistic.
