Career

Career means more than just a job, it is the sum of our contributions within and outside our jobs. We don't need a brilliant background or the right connections of create a successful career, all we need is confidence, vision, and the right attitude. These Quantum principles will help you create the right attitude for a successful career.

This may sound simple, but you can never be successful in your career with half hearted efforts or eye wash. Those who think they can advance by simply impressing others or patching up their work somehow, derive neither satisfaction, nor success from their work. If you are true to your work, your work will bring you rewards sooner or later.

Do not hold yourself back, throw yourself completely in your work. You may change your current job if you dislike it, but as long as you are in it, try to serve your organization to the best of your ability. Do not hesitate to perform duties beyond your job description. If you are unable to do something, do not create excuses, admit it and explain the true cause openly and plainly.

Unexpected circumstances and obstacles are bound to arise in everyone’s career. It is how we deal with these circumstances that determine how well we will do. Many of us become discouraged or resentful. Many of us remain passive and wait to see what will happen.

Successful people deal with these situations pro-actively. They evaluate the situation and take speedy steps to ensure they make the most gain with the least possible loss. Often challenges or unforeseen circumstances are an opportunity in disguise. A timely and wise decision can change the whole situation.

One of the things that harm us the most in our careers is letting our personal likes and dislikes get out of hand. Sometimes we openly get into conflicts with our colleagues, other times we make biased work decisions based on our personal liking. All this harms our career.

To be successful in your career, handle interpersonal relationships professionally and tactfully. Never create conflicts with others. As Confucius says, smart people use their intelligence to avoid, not to win arguments. When you find out about a colleague’s back handed tactics, or when another misbehaves, think for a moment before you react. Is what you are about to do going to help your career? When the boss gives you negative feedback, instead of thinking ‘He (or she) doesn’t like me’, or harbouring a grudge, think of what you can do to get better feedback next time. Your career will be much smoother.

You may think it is cowardice or pandering to be completely obedient to your boss. But the truth is you won’t be able to advance in your organization without gaining your boss’s complete trust and confidence.

Never disagree with your boss. Remember, the ultimate responsibility of the task lies with your boss. Remember also that your boss, because of his/her position, might have access to information that we don’t, and his decision may arise out of that information. For example, if you are a newspaper reporter and your boss is a subeditor, he might know more about the editor’s preferences and priorities than you do.

Do not even harbour any grudge or resentment against him. This will create a distance with your boss at the subconscious level. When it is time to give someone a promotion, you wouldn’t be the one.

Continuous advancement is not possible without continuous growth and development. Evaluate yourself everyday in the light of job related skills and performances. Try to develop managerial and leadership skills. Even if you are not the official leader, try to take yourself to a position where you are effectively the leader. Get job related training. Compete with yourself.

Many of us think that for a successful career, I must be a doctor or engineer or have an MBA, because these are the careers considered most respectable or attractive in our society. if we can't be those things we consider ourselves failures and become frustrated.

The truth is, since the posts for doctors, engineers and MBA holders are limited; not everyone can be those things or whatever is currently considered the most prestigious job in your society. Even lesser people will be a top doctor, engineer or business executive, because the number of positions at the top is even less. And what is considered prestigious or 'in demand' today, is often out of fashion tomorrow.

Similarly, many of us believe that we must have a degree from a university at any cost, otherwise we won't be respectable. We are ready to study subjects  that we are not interested in, that teach us outdated theories and concepts that are not relevant in today’s world. They do not even help us earn a living – unless of course we become teachers in the same subject.

The truth is no honest work is demeaning. If, instead of thinking about what others will say, you choose a career based on what gives you joy, what you are good at, and how you can serve best, nothing will be able to stop your success. And if you invest time in gaining skills or knowledge that will be useful, instead of just getting a degree for a degree's sake, you will be rewarded in the long run.

Many of us think that having a government job is always a good career option because it has more security and tenure. We don't realize that looking for security in jobs often means sacrificing independence, fulfillment and ultimate success. Many tenure jobs do not pay that much, either. In any case, looking for security in life is a futile exercise since life itself is not permanent. So be brave. Do not be afraid of having to prove yourself. That is the way you will develop the most.

To many of us success means earning a lot of money in a short time and with little effort. We refuse job offers because the starting salary is not as much as we want. This attitude can only bring frustration, because there are no short cuts to career success. In most professions one needs to struggle and prove one’s self in the beginning. Those who reach the top of their professions, such as CEOs of multinationals, are usually workaholics or they love their job. In both cases, they work extremely hard and often sacrifice other areas of their life for doing so. So it is better to be prepared.

We have inherited this attitude from the colonial era, when the British created a class of ‘most obedient servants’ to help them rule over the country. We still depend on others to give us a job, and we want to do exactly what they tell us to do, no more, no less. We are afraid of making our own decisions and being responsible for them. But if we can break out of this fear, and adopt an independent career, such as building our own company or service organization, life can be extremely rewarding.

If you think earning a lot of money, fame and power will bring you happiness, you may be surprised. Both depression and suicide rates are high amongst CEOs. Reaching the top does not guarantee inner satisfaction. Evidence suggests that people whose professions involve helping others are the ones most satisfied with their jobs, and are happier than people in other kinds of job. So instead of just reaching the top, think of how you can serve, and you will get both happiness and success.
