Donating Blood During Ramadan

Many people stop donating blood during Ramadan because they fear it might be physically or spiritually harmful. As a result, the suffering of helpless patients increase during this holy month. But the truth is, if you are physically able to donate blood while you are fasting then there is no religious reason for not doing it

Contemporary Islamic scholars are unanimous in their opinion in this respect.

Allama Sheikh Yusuf Al Karadawi says that donating blood for an ailing patient is the best way to serve him. Mufti Osman Shahin says that Islam does not prohibit donating blood unless there is some physical reason.

Mufti Mowlana Ziaur Rahman, the head mufti of the Madrasa-e Darul Ulum in Mirpur and Mufti Mowlana Muzahid Uddin referred to two Hadith in this regard.

Hazrat Akrama (RA) narrated that the prophet (PBUH) had drawn blood out of his body with an instrument while he was in Ihram for Hajj and also while he was fasting.

Hazrat Sabit Al Banani narrated that Hazrat Anas Bin Malek was once asked whether he disliked drawing out blood with an instrument while fasting. In reply he said no, he did not dislike it. But if there was risk of the concerned person becoming weak then that was different.
