Let Us Never Say, 'There is Nothing We can Do'

When a patient suffers from a so-called incurable disease, we usually tell his family and loved ones, 'There is nothing we can do. Take him home.' We don't realize not only how cruel, but also how stupid, this statement is. What is this family supposed to do with this helpless man, where are they supposed to take him? Medical science concerns itself with only prevention and cure. But till today, many diseases are incurable. Isn't it stupid to say that there is nothing we can do for the people who suffer from these incurable diseases?

Of course it is. You, me, all of us can get together and do something for these people. And this is where palliative care starts.

The question that naturally follows is, exactly what can we do?

There are four aspects of our existence: physical, social, mental, and spiritual. As soon as a patient learns his disease is incurable, all aspects of his life are turned up-side down. Medical science can make his physical existence a little more comfortable. But when there is no food in his home, or his child has to stop going to school because of his disease, can't the rest of us stand by his side?

Is it really too much to think of a community where no one will tell a man, 'There is nothing we can do?' Where everyone will know they certainly have something to do? I don't think it is. And we can all build such a society together.

Our culture and tradition is a great asset in this respect. We genuinely care about other people, we are friendly and helpful towards our neighbors. When a neighbor is sick, we go and sit by his side, or at least send him some warm food.

It is this humanity that Quantum is nurturing and fostering. An injection or a pill can do very little for a human being facing death. Awakening the immense power within us then using it unitedly to stand by others, to relieve their pain, to build a beautiful, compassionate community, that is what Quantum means to me.
