Some Quick Facts

  • Can we give Zakat to people of other religions?

Allah says we should spend Zakat on the poor (fuqaraa) and the needy (masakeen). He doesn’t say Muslim poor or needy. During the era of Khulafa-e-Rashideen, the state ensured that the basic necessities of every citizen, regardless of his religion, caste or creed, were met. And the expense was made from the Baitul Mal where the Zakat money was stored. So, there is no problem in spending Zakat money to help the poor and the destitute, whatever his religion.

  • Should my relatives get priority in getting Zakat?

You can give Zakat to parents or grandparents, or children or grandchildren. As for other relatives, the Quran encourages us to give charity to them, not Zakat. The prophet (PBUH) said, ‘The best charity is the charity we give to our family and relatives.

  • Can we spend Zakat money for the construction of mosques?

No, as it doesn’t fall under the 8 categories specified in the Quran.

  • How should unemployed women pay Zakat? Do they need to take permission from their husbands to give Zakat on their jewelry?

Giving Zakat on ornaments is compulsory if it exceeds the nisab (Zakat-able) amount. Women do not need to take permission from their husbands or anyone else to do so. If a woman does not earn any money or possess any cash, she may sell her jewelry if she needs to, but still make sure she pays Zakat.

  • I have a Muslim relative who is an industrialist and a loan defaulter. He says he does not need to pay Zakat because he has debt. Is that true?

No it's not. It is just an excuse and an attitude that is not very beneficial. If, after taking a loan for establishing an industry or some other purpose one has enough money to be eligible for Zakat, then as a Muslim he must pay it. And in such cases, he must deduct not the total debt, but just what he needs to pay back that year to find out if he qualifies for Zakat. The provisions in religion of all great religions are meant to help us, not to burden us. If we think ‘how we can pay zakat’ instead of ‘how we can avoid it’ it is we ourselves who will benefit the most.
